MRI / CT Scan Results - Tentative Path Forward
We received good news (scan results) at the appointment on Monday June 21st.
The Chemo is working. Tumors have shrunk around 20% or so according to the scans.
There are no new lesions showing on the scans either. This is all really good news.
I took a picture of her, Dr. Paluri, and his APP Olivia. It is below.
The hospital has a "Tumor Board" meeting on Tuesdays, and Christian's case was one of them on the ballot for discussion (with the recent scan information available) to define a plan moving forward.
At the tumor board meeting, there are several different medical professionals from different aspects of the Oncology department, including Dr. Paluri, a few surgeon specialists, and others.
They discussed Christian's tumors, the scan results, the chemo response, and what all is involved with the surgeries she will need to have eventually. There is a lot of info here, so I will just try to drop the main points.
1st, they decided that because she is tolerating the chemo so well (for it being a full dose of folfoxiri, which is heavy duty), and because after liver surgery she may not tolerate the chemo as well, that they want to continue with 4 more cycles of chemo. This would be every two weeks as it has been. The next appointment is already set for this coming Monday June 28th.
After these next 2 months of chemo are complete, they want to re-scan (MRI & CT) to see how much smaller things are then. At that point, I imagine there will be another tumor board meeting and they will discuss everything again, to either stick with the plan (that I continue to explain below), or change it.
**Everything I have wrote above, is 100% happening. 4 more treatments (June28, July12, July26, Aug9) and then scans. Unless of course something happens with her labs to make them push a treatment back a week or whatever, but that has not been a concern thus far. Everything from here down, is the tentative plan, and is subject to change based on the scan results and what the tumor board decides after these next 4 treatments. I just want to share the info we received so everyone has an idea of what the path forward looks like for now.**
Their tentative plan, for after the next 2 months (4 treatments) and the tumor board meeting, is to proceed with the liver surgery at that point. Tentative Timeline: Middle of August.
They said that the liver surgery will be very involved, and it would be too much on her body to attempt to do it along with the colon surgery at the same time. So, liver first, colon later.
After the liver surgery, she would have a couple of weeks to recover before receiving 4 more cycles of chemo (2mo). Tentative Timeline: Most of September & October.
After the 4 treatments, she would have the colon surgery. Tentative Timeline: Middle of November.
After the colon surgery, she would be cancer free. She would be done with Chemo and all major surgeries.
She would still have her ileostomy loop that will need to be reversed after the colon surgery has healed for around 3mo. This is not a big deal, and in those 3mo she would be completely back to normal (other than having the pouch, which she has gotten used to and it is not a big deal).
Tentative Timeline: Middle of February.
So that is the tentative plan moving forward so everyone has an idea of where we are with things.
We are going to focus on the next 4 treatments, get the scans, and go from there. We know that. We will see how things play out after that is all done.
Thanks for all the support from everyone. We are taking this whole ordeal one step of the plan at a time. It looks the rest of this year will be a little tough, but we will get thru it, and she is handling it very well. She is very strong. Thanks again for all the support.
