Port Install was a Success

The Port install yesterday went great. We were at the hospital from 10am - 3:30pm, for a 45 minute procedure, but that has come to be expected. She has some soreness, and needs to be careful and take it easy the next few days, but she is good. Other than that, it went very well and she will be ready for her first round of chemo on Monday. Going to another check-up appointment this morning, then we will just enjoy the weekend. Her first round of chemo is scheduled for this coming Monday May 3, 2021 at 7:30 am.

Meeting with Oncologist, Chemotherapy Plan, Scheduling the Port Install

We met with Dr. Paluri on Monday April 26, 2021. Before the consult, Christian had Labs done. During the consult, Dr. Paluri went over what exact drugs the chemotherapy will be comprised of. We also discussed when the treatments would begin, and how many cycles before getting a scan to check for response. She is going to get 4 cycles at first, then we will re-scan. Each cycle is 2 weeks.  The first cycle is going to be Monday May 3, 2021 and it will be 2 chemo drugs. She will receive Irinotecan as a drip infusion for 60-90 minutes. She will receive 5-FU for 10 minutes or so, to make sure she handles it well. Then she will be given a small portable pump with the actual dosage of 5-FU that will slowly be administered over the next 46 hours. After that time has passed, we will go back to have it removed and the port flushed. The 2nd Cycle of chemo (Monday May 17, 2021) will add a third chemo drug. That drug is Oxaliplatin. She will continue those 3 drugs for the remaining 2 cycles after

Loop Ileostomy

Talking to Dr. Paluri, chemo was going to be the first line of offense in this battle. The name of the game is to shrink the tumors in the liver, to where the small ones basically disappear, and the large one is reduced so it can be resected surgically. The tumor in the colon would need to be resected surgically as well. Since she would need to have a loop ileostomy for the colon surgery later down the road anyways, everyone on thought it would be best to go ahead and do that now. The reason for that, is to eliminate the risk of another blockage, causing another perforation, causing another infection.  An infection like that happening again, while she is on chemo, would be a very big deal as her immune system will not be very strong at that time. She was scheduled to have the loop ileostomy procedure done on Monday April 19, 2021.  It went very well. She was admitted and stayed in the hospital until Thursday April 22, 2021. During that week the ostomy nurse (Jill), who is very awesome,

Liver Biopsy Results Come

It is Tuesday April 13, 2021 in the morning. We are sitting on the couch. We have been constantly checking her "mychart" to see if the results have posted. "New Test Results" show up. We take a deep breath and open it up. The masses in the liver, are indeed malignant tumors. At this point, we had already discussed the possibility of this being a good possibility. We were obviously hoping it was not, but the puzzle pieces were all coming together. Most people with Advanced Colorectal Cancer that has spread, it goes to the liver. This is considered Stage 4. With this news, we began talking to her Oncologist (Dr. Paluri) about what the path forward looks like. Before getting more in depth, he wanted an MRI of the liver area to have a better image of what we were dealing with.  The MRI was scheduled and performed on Friday April 16, 2021.  The results from that, were pretty much the same as what the CT Scans had showed. There was a large tumor in the right lobe of the l

3 Weeks in the Hospital

My wife Christian is 36 years old. She works out at least 4 days a week. She eats super healthy, and is in excellent shape. This is her Cancer Story.  She began having severe abdominal pain on Wednesday March 17, 2021 while she was at work. It was so bad, I had to go pick her up, as she could not drive. This unlike her, as she is very tough and handles pain unlike anyone I have ever seen. I brought her home, and she rested on the couch, still in pain. She began to run a fever. We both decided to give it the evening to see if it would go away. The next morning, she was still having pain, and her fever had went up to 104. We went to the ER. Upon arriving at the ER, they did multiple tests and exams, and ended up admitting her later that day. The team did some tests and concluded that she had some sort of infection, but did not know what it was, or where it came from. They spent the majority of the next 3 weeks trying to figure that out. She was put on several different antibiotics given
